Reports have been circulating of a mysterious organization known as the Pineapple Fund. Little is known about the organization, other than that it is run by an anonymous bitcoin philanthropist who has pledged to donate $86 million to various charities and projects around the world.
One such project is ‘Pencils of Promise,’ founded by Adam Braun. Braun was ecstatic to find a donation of $999,999.99 in his charity’s bank account. He states:
“I ran around my house with joy, and danced with our twin babies to celebrate (we do a lot of dancing together) the impact that I know that donation will have in the world.”
Reuters later reported the California-based Open Medicine Foundation received donations totaling $5 million. The donor, known only as “Pine,” first provided the OMF with $1 million. A month later, another donation of $4 million was received by the foundation.
According to Bitcoin Magazine, Pine first announced the organization’s intentions on Reddit in December of 2017. The Pineapple Fund has since donated to 15 different charities or projects (listed below). Pine stated:
“Sometime around the early days of bitcoin, I saw the promise of decentralized money and decided to mine/buy/trade some magical internet tokens. The expectation shattering returns of bitcoin over many years has [led] to an amount far more than I can spend. What do you do when you have more money than you can ever possibly spend? Donating most of it to charity is what I’m doing.”
Pine discovered bitcoin when it was still a small community “trying to turn a toy project into a new decentralized monetary paradigm.” Convinced the world needs peace, love, unity and respect, the operation focuses on wildlife and environmental conservation, medical research, and mental health, just to name a few.
